Transverse waves are waves where the wave waves where the direction of travel of the wave is perpendicular to the direction of vibration of the waves.

The blue particle can be thought of as the particles of the waves. I have made one of the particle red so that it’s easier to follow it. Notice that the red particle is simply moving up and down, while the direction of wave travel is actually to the left. As such, this is a transverse waves as the direction of vibration is perpendicular to the direction of the wave movement.
